Held in Vienna from 14-17 May 2025, EuroPerio11 brought together 10,000 participants from 107 countries for the world’s leading congress in periodontology and implant dentistry. Organised by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), the congress combined groundbreaking science, clinical innovation and practical education across more than 100 sessions, with contributions from over 150 internationally renowned experts.
Among its most anticipated educational experiences were the live surgical procedures, connecting operating theatres at the Sigmund Freud University (SFU) Dental Clinic directly with more than 4,000 participants at the congress. Delivering this highly complex programme required seamless coordination between IAPCO Accredited PCO Mondial Congress & Events, EFP, SFU Dental Clinic, specialist live surgery broadcaster Keel Live and production partner STEINERLIVE.COM.
Led and coordinated by Mondial Congress & Events, the collaboration brought together specialist medical, technical and production expertise to transform working operating theatres into sophisticated broadcast environments and connect them with the EuroPerio11 plenary in real time. The result was an immersive educational experience that gave participants an exceptional view of advanced clinical practice while demonstrating the value of expert coordination, trust and specialist collaboration.
Challenges
Delivering one of the world’s largest dental congresses required the seamless integration of scientific, medical, technical and operational expertise.
- Delivering world-class scientific education: EuroPerio11 needed to combine leading research, practical learning, clinical innovation and emerging technologies while maintaining its position as the benchmark global event for periodontology and implant dentistry.
- Broadcasting live surgery at scale: Complex surgical procedures were performed at the SFU Dental Clinic and transmitted live to more than 4,000 participants. With no opportunity for retakes, every element of the clinical procedure, broadcast production and congress experience needed to work seamlessly in real time.
- Coordinating international expertise: Surgeons from Italy and France, broadcast specialists from Switzerland, Austrian healthcare providers, production teams, technicians and congress organisers needed to operate as one integrated team, with clearly defined responsibilities and constant communication.
- Balancing clinical and production requirements: Transforming working operating theatres into broadcast studios required sophisticated technology and production capability without compromising patient safety, clinical integrity or the surgeons’ ability to perform.
- Creating an immersive educational experience: The objective was not simply to stream surgery onto a screen, but to give thousands of participants a detailed, real-time view of clinical techniques and decision-making, supported by direct discussion and interaction with the surgeons.
- Creating an inclusive global congress: With participants from 107 countries, EuroPerio11 needed to make its scientific content accessible across languages, locations and different modes of participation through digital technology, additional viewing capacity and hybrid delivery.
- Advancing public health leadership: EuroPerio11 also sought to strengthen recognition of periodontal health as an important component of overall health by engaging international health organisations and advancing dialogue around gum health and global public health policy.
Solutions
Mondial Congress & Events brought together and coordinated an international network of specialist partners to deliver a congress that combined scientific excellence, technical innovation and an exceptional participant experience.
- A specialist collaborative team: Mondial Congress & Events coordinated closely with EFP, SFU Dental Clinic, Keel Live and STEINERLIVE.COM across the live surgery programme, connecting clinical scheduling and patient requirements with broadcast production, technical delivery and the congress experience.
- World-class broadcast infrastructure: The 4,000-person plenary hall featured a 204m², 5K-resolution LED screen, supported by five delay screens and seven live cameras, allowing participants to follow procedures in exceptional detail. More than 30 hours of live streaming supported the wider congress programme.
- Transforming surgery into live education: Keel Live transformed the operating theatres into professional broadcast environments, integrating specialist cameras, lighting, sound and streaming technology while enabling the surgical teams to work without interruption.
- Continuous real-time coordination: Surgeons, producers, camera operators, moderators and technical teams remained connected throughout each procedure via dedicated communications, enabling decisions and adjustments to be made instantly while maintaining the integrity of the clinical environment.
- An immersive participant experience: Participants followed the procedures as they happened before hearing directly from the surgeons through live discussion and Q&A. The combination of close-up visual access and expert explanation transformed clinical observation into an interactive learning experience.
- Accessible global learning: A dedicated overflow area in the exhibition hall provided additional viewing capacity through a silent viewing solution. AI-powered live translation in Spanish, French, Russian and Chinese, together with AI-generated subtitles on venue screens and audience devices, further opened the programme to EuroPerio11’s international audience.
- Scientific programme excellence: More than 100 scientific sessions explored advances in regenerative techniques, digital dentistry, artificial intelligence, sustainability and the growing links between periodontal and systemic health. Interactive workshops, live demonstrations and major symposia connected the latest evidence with its application in clinical practice.
- Advancing global health dialogue: EuroPerio11 included a milestone session with the World Health Organization (WHO), highlighting the urgent need to integrate periodontal health into broader global public health policy. Mondial supported EFP in delivering the congress environment and programme infrastructure that enabled this important international dialogue.
- Extending the participant experiences: EuroPerio11 combined scientific education with opportunities for connection and wellbeing, including the EP11 Charity Run. More than 400 participants completed the five-kilometre route through Vienna’s Prater Park, with net registration fees donated to the WHO Foundation.
