The First Winner announced at IMEX
Andrew Dergousoff, of ICS Canada, was announced as the winner of the inaugural IAPCO Innovation Award at the IMEX Gala Evening at Frankfurt Opera House in May. The new award for PCOs attracted numerous applications, and the three short-listed nominees were presented by Council to the audience at IAPCO’s Annual Meeting in Lisbon earlier this year, for delegates to vote on the nominees’ innovative ideas, implementation, and successful contributions to their companies.

Dubai wins 2017 Bid
Dubai has won a bid to host the International Association of Professional Congress Organisers (IAPCO) Annual Meeting & General Assembly in 2017. The annual event brings together approximately 100 of the world’s most influential conference organisers from 40 countries, who collectively manage approximately 7,000 meetings per year with a combined annual economic impact of over $5 billion US dollars.

Rollercoaster Survey Results Ups and Downs
The economic impact remains staggering. In 2013, IAPCO members organised meetings that contributed to an approximately 4.4 billion euros to local economies. But this comes at a cost to employment, with the number of full time employees falling by 11% from 2011 to 2013.

And that is exactly what it was: a tremendous welcome to IAPCO and all the IAPCO participants at their Annual Meeting & General Assembly. 45% of the IAPCO membership took the trip to this land of hospitality, fun and promise: and Melbourne did not disappoint. Whilst 74% of those present had not brought an event to Melbourne before, 69% said that they were now likely to do so in the future. 75% said that this visit had changed their perception of the city as a congress destination.

Fay Pannell was the first professional conference organiser to establish such a business in the UK and was certainly one of the first in the world. Fay initially started her business supplying staff and interpreters for international events throughout Europe. Gradually she undertook more and more of the services for her clients until she formed her company.

Membership Growth proves continual desire for Quality
It’s good to have something to cheer about at the end of what can only be described for the industry as a whole as a challenging year.  And IAPCO has plenty to cheer about:  during 2012, eight companies were accepted into membership, bringing the total membership to a 119 from 42 countries, representing all the continents.

IASLC Award based on business partnership
“The IAPCO Council” introduced Mathias Posch, MD of International Conference Services Vancouver, nominator of the Award, “unanimously voted to give this year’s Award to the “International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer – IASLC”.  ”We are very honoured to be presented with this Award” responded Mr. John Wetherington, CFO and COO of IASLC, who received the Award, “Our Association deals with one of the worst diseases of our time and education is the key to better care. As the congress grows and is able to reach more people, more people get proper treatment and we would not be able to provide that and grow without a professional partner like ICS at our side.”

Science or destination? Which is more popular to attract the delegate? 
“In a recent survey of over 4000 delegates”, revealed Christian Mutschlechner, of the Vienna Convention Bureau, “when asked what reasons made them attend a conference, the ‘destination’ did not feature in the top 10 list of answers: science, CME, networking all featured strongly. Therefore the future for attracting healthcare events to a destination is primarily about the exchange of science”.

IAPCO’s national seminar in Wolfsberg drew over 500 years’ experience – 210 years from partici-pants and the faculty members added more than 300 years!  This experience enabled participants to question, discuss and probe the faculty presentations achieving vision for the future. Quebec, the location for IAPCO’s 42nd Annual Meeting, matched “scenergy” exactly. The most incredible scenery combined with a fantastic energy was the underlying criteria to some of the extra-curricula activities put on by the organisers, JPdL. Dog sledding, skiing, and an overnight stay in the Ice Hotel, all provided activities for those members of IAPCO who wished to extend their stay beyond the core dates of the Meeting…

Tongue in cheek “I’ll Sue you Later” could very well become the new standard phrase in today’s North American society. The VAT Package
With the VAT Package, changes have been made to the rules on the place of supply of services (which determines where services are taxed) and on the refund of VAT to businesses established within the EU (to modernise and simplify the refund procedure).   The European Chapter of IAPCO fired questions at Ms Pia Michelsen of the European Commission (DG TAXUD) who explained the changes which had taken place, with particular focus on those changes which are likely to affect the members of IAPCO.

The keynote session at the ICPB’s Convention India Conclave was presented by Philippe Fournier, President, IAPCO, on Conferences in the Knowledge Economy:  Face to Face Meetings are changing and empowering our World.   “We are a global world, which means global meetings!  Meetings have been a solution over the centuries and today’s globalisation can only enhance the need to meet, not, as a perceived advantage of social communication, detract.  When people meet, things happen, things change, things improve, economy rises.  Face to face meetings power the economy.”

Transparency has different meanings for different clients.  Some want the assurance that all costs are included in the budget – no late surprises while others want all costs detailed in a budget and to understand who ends up with the money. The misperception of transparency is the belief that there is an obligation to know every tiny detail whereas the real obligation is to obtain value for money.

Last year Copenhagen was the host city for the European Operation Room Nurses Association Congress 2009, with 1800 delegates in the Bella Center, as a result of which, nominated by Peder Andersen of DIS Congress Services, the host of the congress was delighted to receive IAPCO’s Regional Client Award.

Over 3,4 B€ from leading PCOs in 2009!
The total number of meetings handled by the 100 IAPCO members rose by 9% over 2008, a staggering total of 5641 run over the year.   Association meetings rose by 15%, Governmental by 46% and Corporate meetings by just 2%, reflecting a 46% drop in the international corporate market.   The total number of participants rose from 1,968519 to 2,117915.

Incredible India welcomes IAPCO first Regional Seminar
62 participants from 6 of the 8 major cities in India descended on the incredible emerging valley development of Lavasa, 2.5 hours north of Mumbai.   The organiser of the regional seminar said “this is a milestone event being the first meetings industry training seminar to be held in India.   Such a strong gathering of industry professionals sustantiates the fact that this is a great step towards building intellectual capacity within the Indian industry”.

Professional Congress Organisers (PCOs) are meeting in Athens for their annual gathering to discuss issues and answers to this tough economic period and to show that face-to-face meetings are still very important in such times. “An event is an opportunity to create a face-to-face experience and an opportunity to reach out and communicate a brand, a new technology, a new study” said Patrizia Semprebene Buongiorno, “meetings have a strategic value because they are part of the corporate business marketing mix”.

BE RESPONSIBLE!  IAPCO response to “EU to declare war on business trips”
The most recent decision from the EU relates to limiting business trips with the target of reducing them by 20% and replacing them with telecommunication and web-based alternatives.  Business trips embrace may aspects, an important one of which is attendance at meetings, conferences and events.   By heavily directing the limitation of business travel, and thus attendance at conferences and events, there are serious consequences further down the line.

Fiera Milano Congressi wins 2008 IAPCO National Supplier Award
This important Award was given to the President Fiera Milano Congressi, Giuseppe Zola, by Patrizia Buongiorno, IAPCO President, at a recent celebratory dinner at the Palazzo Visconti in Milan.;   Giuseppe was one of the driving forces in determining the role played by FMC in the creation of a Milan system promoting the capital of Lombardy in the European City congress circuit, a fact recognised and endorsed by AIM-Group, who nominated them for the Award.

Exhibitions are increasingly influencing the choice of destination
This was the message from the IAPCO/UFI/IPCAA Seminar during IMEX.  Simply exhibitions create value, but the destination has to be right.   But no resorts, no 5-star hotels, no spouses for the pharmaceutical industry.   Whilst influencing factors may change the face of the industry today, they merely represent change, of which destinations need to be aware when pitching for their market share.

Anticipating 2009/2010 – it’s not all bad!
IAPCO members enjoyed yet another bumper year of growth in 2008 according to the results of the latest IAPCO annual activity survey the third in the series.   The business generated by IAPCO members during 2008 was immense, representing a 26% increase over 2007 and a combined increase of 44% over 2006.  IAPCO members continue to dominate the meetings market.

The recent economic and business survey from IAPCO showed that whilst 2009 was realising he expected downturn, 2010 definately shows signs of an upturn.   “This is not just a reflection of the economy” says IAPCO President, Patrizia Semprebene Buongiorno “but reflects the PCOs ability to manage a crisis”.

Jorge Castex, who was twice President of IAPCO (1977/79 and 1990/92), has been unanimously appointed Honorary Member of the Association by the IAPCO Council.  The announcement was made during the recent IMEX Event.
