Number of hotel rooms in Basel approaches the 10,000 mark

The increasing importance of the City of Basel as a venue for congresses and other major events is reflected in the growth of its available hotel accommodation. And those spending the night in Basel receive the attractive BaselCard free of charge too.

The number of hotel rooms in Basel and its immediate surroundings is gradually approaching the 10,000 mark. Of the current 9600 rooms, 1000 are within immediate walking distance of the Congress Center at Messe Basel. Another 6100 rooms can be reached within a quarter of an hour from the city centre, and a further 2900 rooms are a maximum of 30 minutes away, including the accommodation options over the border in Germany and France.

Accommodation capacity has been significantly increased over the past few months. In March 2017, the ibis styles hotel opened at Basel SBB railway station with 186 rooms. In Lörrach (Germany), the Steigenberger Hotel with 227 rooms commenced operation in June 2017 and, back in September 2016 already, the Motel One opened with its 143 new rooms at Barfüsserplatz – right in the heart of the city. Mövenpick’s new 5-star hotel at Basel SBB railway station, scheduled for autumn 2019, is eagerly awaited, and this will add a further 264 rooms.

BaselCard: Free use of public transport and Wi-Fi
Not only the capacity but also the quality of Basel’s hotel accommodation has been boosted. This is borne out by the comprehensive renovation of the East West Hotel (previously the Hotel Hecht) with 44 rooms, the Hotel Wettstein with 73 rooms and the Hotel Hyperion (formerly the Ramada Plaza) located directly on Exhibition Square with 224 rooms. The Airbnb platform is also playing an increasing role in overnight stays. According to the “bz Basel” daily newspaper, 6455 Airbnb beds are currently on offer in a total of 3143 rooms throughout the city.

Guests staying the night in Basel – including Airbnb guests as well now – benefit from many advantages with the BaselCard. As of 2018, the BaselCard is replacing the proven Mobility Ticket for free use of the excellent public transport system. The city’s own “Guest Wi-Fi Basel” is also offered free of charge at a number of central locations. When discovering the cultural city of Basel, holders of the BaselCard benefit from a 50% reduction in admission to all the museums, the big zoo and many other attractions.
